People have often stated that the Bible contains contradictions. The problem with that statement is that Gods word is the ultimate source of truth, and truth does not contradict itself. The following are some verses that people have tried to argue as being contrary to one another, following each list is a summation of why the verses are in harmony. Is God Visible or Invisible? Invisible: John 1:18 18 No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him. KJV John 5:37 37 And the Father himself, which hath sent me, hath borne witness of me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape. KJV Exodus 33:20 20 And he said, Thou canst not see my face: for there shall no man see me, and live. KJV Visible: Exodus 33:23 23 And I will take away mine hand, and thou shalt see my back parts: but my face shall not be seen. KJV Exodus 33:11 11 And the LORD spake unto Moses face to face, as a man speaketh unto his friend. And he turned again into the camp: but his servant Joshua, the son of Nun, a young man, departed not out of the tabernacle. KJV While God had had made Himself visible in various forms, now they had God the Son in front of them and were not able to see him. God is not invisible, but man has the inability to see His vision. Is God all powerful? God is all powerful Jeremiah 32:27 27 Behold, I am the LORD, the God of all flesh: is there any thing too hard for me? KJV God is NOT all powerful: Judges 1:19 19 And the LORD was with Judah; and he drave out the inhabitants of the mountain; but could not drive out the inhabitants of the valley, because they had chariots of iron. KJV God is all powerful, he is of Himself to do anything that he so desires. However, when using man to accomplish things, He will be limited by man’s faith and dedication, for will not force man to have increased faith unless it is man’s desire to do so. Is God Just & Impartial? God is Just & Impartial: Romans 2:11 11 For there is no respect of persons with God. KJV God is Unjust and Partial: Exodus 20:5 5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; KJV As our heavenly Father God is not partial between us, he sees us whiter than snow, it is not so with the unsaved because they are stained with sin and living in rejection of His Holy name. MORE CONTROVERSIAL ISSUES: May men wear long hair? Long hair is OK: Judges 13:5 5 For, lo, thou shalt conceive, and bear a son; and no razor shall come on his head: for the child shall be a Nazarite unto God from the womb: and he shall begin to deliver Israel out of the hand of the Philistines. KJV Long hair is not OK: 1 Corinthians 11:14 14 Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him? KJV Long hair was a part of taking a Nazarine vow. This was a Holy vow unto God separating a man to this cause. As a general rule culture down through the ages has frowned upon long hair on men, that has helped keep the difference between the appearances of the two. As time changes, culture can change, but in that part of the world at that time, it was a shame to have long hair, not because God said it was, but because the culture of that time dictated that it was. Is divorce restricted or permitted? Permitted: Deuteronomy 24:1 1 When a man hath taken a wife, and married her, and it come to pass that she find no favour in his eyes, because he hath found some uncleanness in her: then let him write her a bill of divorcement, and give it in her hand, and send her out of his house. KJV Restricted: Matthew 19:9 9 And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery. KJV It was never God’s intention for man and woman to divorce, just as it was never His intention for man to sin, however, because of man’s sinful nature, divorce, aside from areas of adultery, is going to be a reality in the lives of some, even though it may be a legal divorce God does not see it this way, and calls any remarriage adultery. Is baptism Commanded for salvation? Commanded: Matthew 28:19-20 19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: 20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen. KJV Not Commanded: 1 Corinthians 1:17 17 For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect. KJV No, Baptism is commanded for obedience, not salvation. It is an outward act of obedience, a WORK, salvation comes not by works, but by grace through faith. Do the wicked live long? Livelong: Job 21:7-8 7 Wherefore do the wicked live, become old, yea, are mighty in power? 8 Their seed is established in their sight with them, and their offspring before their eyes. KJV Do not live long: Job 36:14 14 They die in youth, and their life is among the unclean. KJV Psalms 55:23 23 But thou, O God, shalt bring them down into the pit of destruction: bloody and deceitful men shall not live out half their days; but I will trust in thee. KJV Proverbs 10:27 27 The fear of the LORD prolongeth days: but the years of the wicked shall be shortened. KJV While it is true that some who are wicked may live long, in God’s timeline they certainly do not. They may enjoy a limited amount of success here on earth, but our life is but a vapor, and in any mans estimation that is not very long. Is man born sinful? Born sinful: Psalms 58:3 3 The wicked are estranged from the womb: they go astray as soon as they be born, speaking lies. KJV Infants are sinless: Deuteronomy 1:39 39 Moreover your little ones, which ye said should be a prey, and your children, which in that day had no knowledge between good and evil, they shall go in thither, and unto them will I give it, and they shall possess it. KJV Romans 9:11 11 (For the children being not yet born, neither having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works, but of him that calleth;) KJV All men are born sinful, man has a sin nature from birth. The difference lies in the point at which they are able to discern good from evil. It is at that point that God will hold them accountable. Should we lay up treasures? Should not: Matthew 6:16 16 Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. KJV Should: Proverbs 13:22 22 A good man leaveth an inheritance to his children's children: and the wealth of the sinner is laid up for the just. KJV Treasures should be laid up but not on this earth and not of this earth. Our treasure should be laid up in Heaven through good works and righteous living, early gain will ultimately be destroyed. Should a sinner be rebuked publicly? He should be rebuked privately: Matthew 18:15 15 Moreover if thy brother shall trespass against thee, go and tell him his fault between thee and him alone: if he shall hear thee, thou hast gained thy brother. KJV He should not be rebuked publicly: 1 Timothy 5:19-20 19 Against an elder receive not an accusation, but before two or three witnesses. 20 Them that sin rebuke before all, that others also may fear. KJV There is a progression in the rebuking of a sinner, only as the last resort, and after all other methods mentioned have been exhausted should he be rebuked publicly, and in that case there is a specific method that is to be used. |
